Edith Marie (Aherron) Mathews was born on July 26, 1920 at Elizabeth City, VA to Thomas Aherron and Willie Mae (Garbee), and had siblings Carlton Thomas Aherron, Louise Arlene (Aherron) Hasty, Violet Elizabeth (Aherron) Drew, Kenneth Eugene Aherron, Reuben Beverley Aherron, Lucy Rachel (Aherron) Gregory Johnson, and Richard Theodore Aherron. She married Ray Thomas Mathews Sr. on June 11, 1941 in Danville, Virginia United States, and they were married until Ray's death on October 11, 1991 in Pittsylvania County United States. She had children Ray Thomas Mathews Jr., Bruce Lee Mathews, and John David Mathews. Edith Mathews died at age 94 years old on March 20, 2015 in Danville, Pittsylvania County, and was buried on March 28, 2015 at Highland Burial Park N Main St, in Danville.

    Edith A. Mathews Mrs. Edith Marie Aherron Mathews, age 94, died Friday, March 20, 2015, at Roman Eagle Memorial Home, Danville, Va. She had been in declining health for several years. Mrs. Mathews was born July 26, 1920, to Thomas and Willie Mae Garbee Aherron and lived most of her life in and around the Danville area, where she worked as an LPN for thirty five years. Mrs. Mathews and her husband, Ray Thomas Mathews Sr., helped found and were active members of Rivermont Baptist Church. Until late in life, Mrs. Mathews was an avid gardener and member of the Sarah Bradley Garden Club of Danville. Mrs. Mathews is preceded in death by her husband, Ray Thomas Mathews Sr.; four brothers, Reuben "Buck" Aherron and Carlton Aherron of Danville, Kenneth Aherron of Chesapeake, Va. and Ted Aherron of Newport News, Va. In addition, four sisters have preceded her, Violet Drew, Louise Hasty and Cordelia Gosney, of Danville, and Ila Miller of Johnson City, Tenn. Mrs. Mathews is survived by her three sons, Ray Jr (Kathy)of Henderson Nev., Bruce (Robin) of Alexandria, Va. and John (Louise) of Beaufort, S.C.; four grandchildren and four great grandchildren. Mrs. Mathews has one surviving sibling, Rachel Johnson of Richmond, Va. Services were held at Wrenn-Yeatts Chapel, North Main St, Danville, Va. at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, March 28, 2015. The family received friends one hour prior to the service. Interment followed at Highland Burial Park. In lieu of flowers, please send a donation to the Danville Life Saving Crew, Roman Eagle Rehabilitation and health Care Center or Rivermont Baptist Church. The family would like to extend their warm appreciation for the loving care extended our Mother during her later years at Roman Eagle and especially to Mrs. Winnie Oom, her constant friend and companion. Thank you all. Wrenn-Yeatts North Main Chapel is respectfully serving the Mathews family.
