    The Ballarat Star. 10th May 1919. MARRIAGES. SLORACH.- MITCHELL. The marriage of Mr. James Slorach, eldest son of Mr. and Mrs. James Slorach, of Joel Joel, to Miss Edith Mitchell, eldest daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. Mitchell, of Daylesford, was quietly celebrated in St. Matthew's Presbyterian Church, Stawell, on Easter Monday morning. The Rev. H. C. Matthew, M.A., officiated in the presence of relatives of the contracting parties.

In 1888, in the year that Edith Kate (Mitchell) Slorach was born, on January 12th, the 'Schoolhouse Blizzard' blanketed Dakota Territory. Montana, Minnesota, Nebraska, Kansas, and Texas were hit, leaving 235 dead. Many of those who perished were children on their way home from school. The day was relatively warm when it began and the blizzard hit unexpectedly, catching most by surprise.

In 1941, she was 53 years old when on June 25th, President Roosevelt signed Executive Order 8802, prohibiting racial discrimination in the defense industry. EO 8802 was the first federal action to prohibit employment discrimination - without prejudice as to "race, creed, color, or national origin" - in the U.S. Civil Rights groups had planned a march on Washington D.C. to protest for equal rights but with the signing of the Order, they canceled the March.
