ORDISH. It is with sincere regret we record the death of Mr. Edgar Ordish, a native of this town, who passed away very suddenly on Sunday morning, at the age of 65 years. Deceased had ridden his bicycle out to visit a friend (Mr. O. Wanke), in Gladstone road, when on arrival he suddenly became ill and collapsed. Deceased was a builder by occupation, and had been a resident of this town all his life, and has left a widow and one son to mourn their sad loss, and to whom we extend our sympathy. The funeral, which was largely attended, took place on Monday afternoon, his remains being laid to rest in the Presbyterian portion of the Dandenong cemetery, there being a large number present to witness the last sad rites. Deceased was an esteemed resident and a member of the Lodge of Sincerity, Dandenong Mark Lodge, and the Loyal Constant Lodge M.U.I.O.O.F. The service at the home and graveside was conducted by the Rev. John Meers, and the Masonic service by the Wor. Master, Bro. F. W. Aumann, the chaplain (Bro. P. Smale), and director of ceremonies (Wor. Bro. L. Murray). The pall-bearers were Messrs. F. Aumann, R. B. Brooks, J. Hehir, Cr. Butler, O. Wanke, P. Smale, R. Vizard, J. Kirkham, J. Mills and F. In 1871, in the year that Edgar Ordish was born, on October 8th, 4 major fires started on the shores of Lake Michigan - in Chicago (Illinois), Peshtigo (Wisconsin), Holland (Michigan) and Manistee (Michigan). The Chicago fire is the most well known of them because it left almost 100,000 people homeless. But the Peshtigo Fire killed around 2,500 people. The casualty count made it the deadliest fire in US history.

In 1886, when he was only 15 years old, on May 4th, a general strike began in Chicago. Workers were striking for an 8 hour workday and in protest of the killing - by police - of several workers the day before. When an unknown person threw a dynamite bomb, the strike became violent. Seven policemen were killed as well as 4 civilians. It became known as the Haymarket Riot and eventually resulted in an 8 hourwork day as well as commemorations on May 1st for worker's rights.
