  • Introduction

    Earl Crusenberry, born in Wise County, Virginia, was the child of Reese Crusenbury (1898 - 1945) and Reppia Payne (1904 - 1983). He had siblings Bruce (1937 - 1945) and Joyce. When Earl was 19, he was living in Richmond West Virginia with his parents and siblings Evelyn, 11, Janet, 9, and Bruce, 3. He was a coal miner and had completed the 6th grade. His father was also a coal miner. Two years later, Earl, who said that he didn't have a middle name, completed his draft card for World War II. He was living in Roday Virginia and his next of kin was his father, Reese. He was still working as a miner at Stonega Coke and Coal Company. Earl was 5 ft 11 in and weighed 156 pounds, had brown eyes, brown hair, and a light complexion. Earl married Mary Lynn Pugh (1923 - 1991). They had son Christopher and daughter Patsy.

In 1921, in the year that Earl Crusenberry was born, in May, the Emergency Quota Act - or Emergency Immigration Act - was passed. The law restricted the number of immigrants to 357,000 per year. It also established an immigration quota in which only 3 per cent of the total population of any ethnic group already in the USA in 1910, could be admitted to America after 1921. Although the Act was supposed to be temporary, it stayed in effect until 1965.

In 1954, at the age of 33 years old, Earl was alive when from April 22 through June 17th, the Army v. McCarthy hearings were held. The U.S. Army accused Roy Cohn (chief counsel to Senator McCarthy and later trusted mentor of Donald Trump) of blackmail. McCarthy and Cohn accused the U.S. Army of harboring communists. The Army allegations were found to be true. The U.S. Senate later censured McCarthy.
