Duncan Macfarlane was born on March 23, 1809 to Catherine (Telfer) Macfarlane and Donald Macfarlane, and had siblings Donald Macfarlane, Christina MacFarlane, John Macfarlane, Catherine (Macfarlane) Forrester, Jean (Macfarlane) MacDonald, Agnes Macfarlane, Mary (MacFarlane) MacFarlane, Janet (MacFarlane) Stewart, and Walter Macfarlane. He married Miss (Ridsdale) MacFarlane, and died at age 57 years old on January 4, 1867 in Aberfoyle, Perthshire County Scotland. Duncan Macfarlane was buried at Aberfoyle churchyard - Manse Road, in Aberfoyle.

In 1809, in the year that Duncan Macfarlane was born, on May 5th, Mary Dixon Kies (March 21, 1752 – 1837) became the first recipient of a patent granted to a woman by the United States. She had developed a technique for weaving straw with silk and thread to make hats. While her hats were popular at first, fashion changed and she died penniless.

In 1817, at the age of only 8 years old, Duncan was alive when on June 12th, German inventor Karl Drais created and rode a dandy horse - also called a "Draisine" or "Laufmaschine". It was the earliest form of a bicycle and had no pedals - the dandy horse was wooden and ridden by running or walking while sitting on the bike.
