Charges reduced for four accused of killing boxer
The following appeared in the Detroit Free Press in Detroit Michigan on Thursday October 4, 1984 written by Joe Swickard (Free Press Staff Writer):

Four men accused in the slaying and robbery of former world-ranked boxer DuJuan Johnson were ordered Wednesday to stand trial in Recorder's Court on reduced charges, and all charges were dropped against a fifth defendant. The five - Derek Payton, Eric Payton, Calvin Preuitt, Larry Amerson and Love Rice - originally were charged with murder and armed robbery in the Sept. 19 fatal shooting of Johnson in the 11600 block of Wisconsin. Derek Payton also was charged with assault with intent to murder and using a firearm in the commission of a felony for allegedly shooting at Johnson's companion, George Jones.

But after a two-day preliminary examination, Detroit District Judge Prentis Edwards ordered Derek Payton, 17, to stand trial on a reduced charge of manslaughter and on the assault and firearms charges.

Edwards ordered Eric Payton, 18, Preuitt, 19, and Amerson, 28, to stand trial on larceny charged. All charges against Rice, 23, were dismissed. A 15-year-old is being held by juvenile authorities in connection with the case. In a related matter, Ronald Payton, 21, a brother of the defendants, was charged with obstructing justice for allegedly trying to intimidate a witness Tuesday, according to a warrant issued Wednesday.

Witnesses in court gave this account of the night of Johnson's death: Jones and Johnson drove to the Paytons' house, where Jones confronted Derek Payton about a $20 debt. After the two fought, Derek Payton and his friends went into the Payton house. Derek Payton then came out and shot Johnson, 23.

The juvenile, Eric Payton, Preuitt and Amerson then took items from the car. Defense attorneys argued that Derek Payton fired in the "hot blood" of a fight rather than in a coolly planned slaying. If convicted, Derek Payton faces a maximum sentence of life in prison. The other defendants face maximum sentences of 10 years in prison if convicted.

6 held in slaying of former boxer
The following appeared in the Detroit Free Press in Detroit Michigan on Friday September 21, 1984 by Sandy McClure (Free Press Staff Writer):

Homicide investigators said they will seek warrants today against five men and a 15-year-old boy held in the street slaying of Dujuan Johnson, a former Kronk Recreation boxer.

Witnesses told police that Johnson, who lived on 24th Street, argued with at least one man, who ran into a nearby house and returned with a gun about 6 p.m. Wednesday on Wisconsin north of Plymouth. He and perhaps others fired several shots at Johnson, witnesses told police.

Johnson's alleged assailants, including three bothers aged 15, 17 and 18, then stole his jewelry and fled. They were arrested a short time later, police said. The adults were held at police headquarters, and the 15-year-old was at the Wayne County Youth Home. Police said they found suspected heroin marked with a "Real Summer Madness" label in Johnson's car.

Johnson, 23, was a former Kronk teammate of Milton McCrory and floored Aaron Pryor, the World Boxing Council junior welterweight champion, in the first round of a fight three years ago. Pryor came back to knock out Johnson.

Johnson later joined the Cleveland-based team of promoter Don King, for whom he boxed for about a year. Johnson was not associated with King at the time of his death.

Floyd Logan, one of Johnson's former boxing coaches at Kronk, said Thursday he was shocked to hear of the slaying. "It really knocked me out," he said. "He was here when I got here six years ago, but then he left two or three years ago to go with Don King. I don't know how much about what he did away from here, But I knew him and his people and just don't know what to say about this. It was real sad to hear."
