Douglas Dee Wallace 1911 - 1993

Douglas Dee Wallace of Suffolk, Suffolk City County, VA was born on February 25, 1911 in Dry Fork, Pittsylvania County to Nathaniel Valentine Wallace and Julia Levada (Aaron) Wallace. He had siblings Raymond Daniel Wallace, George Lee Wallace, Naomi Eva Wallace Scearce Eanes, Fred Nathaniel Wallace, Boyd Edward Wallace, Helen Gould Wallace Jeffcoate Shumate, Louise Lavada Wallace Richardson, John Aaron Wallace, Bertha Mae (Wallace) Stowe, Julian Lee Wallace, and Catherine Wallace. He married Shirley Elinor (Zeigler) Wallace on December 31, 1937 in Pearisburg, Giles County, and they were married until Douglas' death on July 9, 1993 in Suffolk. He had children Douglas Dee Wallace Jr., Eleanor Kay (Wallace) Best, and Barbara Gail (Wallace) Shelton. Douglas Wallace was buried on July 12, 1993 at Cedar Hill Cemetery Mahan St, in Suffolk.

    Douglas Wallace Sr. Douglas Dee Wallace Sr., 82, a native of Danville, V.A., died Friday, July 9. He retired in 1963 as a road master after 31 years at Virginian Railroad and Norfolk & Western Railroad. Mr. Wallace was a member of Main Street United Methodist Church, Masonic Lodge 151 in Mullens, W.V., and retired in 1975 from Leggett Department Store. Survived by his wife, Shirley Elinor Wallace; two daughters, Kay W. Best of Richmond, V.A., and Barbara W. Shelton of Suffolk, V.A.; two sisters, Naomi (Glenn) Eanes of Chicago, I.L., and Louise (Berkley) Richardson of Danville, V.A.; six grandchildren and a great-grandson. Visitation from 7 to 8 P.M. Sunday at R.W. Baker & Co. Funeral Home. Graveside service 11 A.M. Monday in Cedar Hill Cemetery by the Rev. Alan R. Felumlee. Memorials to Main Street United Methodist Church Memorial Fund, 202 N. Main St., Suffolk, V.A. 23434; or the Nansemond-Suffolk Volunteer Rescue Squad, 428 Market St., Suffolk 23434.

In 1911, in the year that Douglas Dee Wallace was born, the United States Supreme Court broke up Standard Oil in May. John D. Rockefeller established Standard Oil in 1870 and it was the largest oil refinery at the time. The Supreme Court found that Standard Oil of New Jersey (one of the many iterations of Standard Oil) was guilty of "monopolizing the petroleum industry through a series of abusive and anticompetitive actions". The Court broke up the several entities that comprised Standard Oil and they eventually became competing firms.

Her first small part in a movie was in There's One Born Every Minute in 1942 but her first starring role was in National Velvet in 1944. She became as famous for her 8 marriages (to 7 people) as she was for her beauty and films.
