    Dougald Woodrow McLaurin (Woodrow) was born November 17, 1925, to Dougald Leondas McLaurin (1880 - 1946) and his second wife - Dora Florence Smith (1890 - 1969). He was the youngest son to the couple. His siblings from D.L. and Dora McLaurin was Hellon Smith was listed in the only place I saw a middle name (married name Beard), Lois Joyce (married name Averitte), and Lavenia Love (married name Morefield). From D.L.'s first marriage, there were 4 "half-siblings" (none considered themselves a half-sibling as they were very close) - Eston Leon, Ruth (married name Beard), Ethel Pauline (married name McLaurin, and Annie Catherine (never married). There were 4 children, Woodrow's father died when he was 21 and he spent most of his adult life farming the family farm. He married Freida LaGray Bell when he was 25 and Freida was 16. They had two sons Dougal (mom filled out the birth certificate wrong) Woodrow Mclaurin, Jr. and Eston Leon McLaurin.

In 1925, in the year that Dougald Mclaurin was born, in July, the Scopes Trial - often called the Scopes Monkey Trial - took place, prosecuting a substitute teacher for teaching evolution in school. Tennessee had enacted a law that said it was "unlawful to teach human evolution in any state-funded school". William Jennings Bryan headed the prosecution and Clarence Darrow headed the defense. The teacher was found guilty and fined $100. An appeal to the Supreme Court of Tennessee upheld the law but overturned the guilty verdict.

In 1938, by the time this person was only 13 years old, on June 25th (a Saturday) the Fair Labor Standards Act was signed into law by President Roosevelt (along with 120 other bills). The Act banned oppressive child labor, set the minimum hourly wage at 25 cents, and established the maximum workweek at 44 hours. It faced a lot of opposition and in fighting for it, Roosevelt said "Do not let any calamity-howling executive with an income of $1,000 a day, ...tell you...that a wage of $11 a week is going to have a disastrous effect on all American industry."
