Doris Hannah (Frost) Moore of Carlton Australia was born on October 17, 1904 in Carlton, City of Melbourne County, VIC to Elizabeth Minnie (Basstian) Frost and Alfred Edward Frost. She had siblings Harriet Louisa Frost, Elsie Lillian Marie Frost, and William Charles Frost. Doris Moore married James William Howard Moore in 1926, and died at age 97 years old on November 19, 2001 at Cooinda Lodge Nursing Home in Warragul, Baw Baw Shire County.

In 1904, in the year that Doris Hannah Frost was born, the United States acquired the Panama Canal Zone. Now an unincorporated territory of the U.S., the Canal Zone had been previously held by the French, who were constructing a canal. The U.S. took over the construction of the Panama Canal and it was finally finished in 1914, when it was opened to commercial shipping. The United States held the Canal Zone until 1979.

In 1922, Doris was 18 years old when on James Joyce's 40th birthday, his book Ulysses was published in France. The book covers the experiences of an Irishman in Dublin on an ordinary day, 16 June 1904. Now considered a classic, it was controversial at the time. Due to some sexual content, the book was banned in the U.S. during the 1920's and the U.S. Post Office destroyed 500 copies of the novel.
