Don was a Korean Veteran who went to work after discharge at Safeway in SF; in the next few years he became a business owner in the early 60's purchasing Lowell Market from his parents Loretta and Vince. There was a very short lived partnership with his brother , Vince; who's life went in a different direction. Further personal contact between the two was sparce with animosity.
  • Personal Life & Family

He was an individual who, in my experience functioned best on his own. He bought an early 50's 23' inboard cabin cruiser made by Owens that was powered by a plymouth 6. The boat was wood. He cleaned it, repaired the motor and the hull and the cabin; refinished the hull, cabin and deck. He christened her the "Liki Tiki" and she was docked at Oyster Point in South City. Prior to being birthed at Oyster Point and after purchase; Liki Tiki spent about 18 months in the backyard space at Lowell Market enduring repairs and SF fog. Pretty cramped about 14 ' wide and 27 ' deep. He worked the Market from 7am to 7pm, basically 7 days a week from the early 60;s to the late 60's. He tinkered with "tiki" in the hours from 7pm to midnight Owning the "Liki Tiki" suggests that he liked the water; while thats acurrate; what he liked was fishing SF Bay or the Northern Cal coast. Even the fresh water sources like petaluma along the SF waterffront; both the Bay and Golden Gate Bridges; occcassionally a bit outside the gate. Later he became a home repair person; self employed in Sonoma County, northern cal. Tiki was gone by then and early on in Sonoma he worked at various conerns like Safeway, Hewlett Packard, local lumber companies but the atmosphere just did'nt work. became more adversarial then anything else. He was not much about supervision from someone or comment regarding performance; much preffered being given an assignement and coming back for another one after completion.
