  • Introduction

    Detlef was a native German form the Kiel Area (Northern Germany) who arrived in the US in 1924 together with bis wife Elvira. They were members of the Democrates in Putnam Val NY. They were both active in their communities in NY and NJ. Later they moved to Florida. I met him once during a visit to Germany in the 60th. I have my name after him because he supported our family very generously after WW2. Could not find further relatives but know he had children

In 1893, in the year that Detlef Niese was born, on March 4th, Grover Cleveland became the 24th President of the United States. On July 1st, President Cleveland was operated on for a non-cancerous tumor in his mouth. He chose to have the operation secretly because he didn't want to worsen the financial depression that was occurring at the time.

In 1935, he was 42 years old when on September 8th, Louisiana Senator Huey Long was shot by Dr. Carl Weiss. Weiss was shot and killed immediately by Long's bodyguards - Long died two days later from his injuries. Long had received many death threats previously, as well as threats against his family. He was a powerful and controversial figure in Louisiana politics (and probably gained power through multiple criminal acts). His opponents became frustrated with their attempts to oust him and Dr. Weiss was the son-in-law of one of those opponents. His funeral was attended by 200,000 mourners.
