Aunt Edie used to babysit my older sister, Merle, once a month and as children, we always looked forward to staying with her. We knew we were in for a treat!
Once we were settled and put our bags away, Aunt Edie would take us into her kitchen where bowls and cookie sheets were set up and ready to use. It was cookie baking time! We got to pick which cookies we wanted to make (from scratch of course) and they were always delicious. Aunt Edie made the Best cookies ever! With satisfied tummies we moved on to board games. Scrabble and Monopoly were favorites.
Later we would curl up snuggled on each side of our favorite aunt and she would read to us until we dozed off, peacefully listening to the soft drone of Aunt Edie's voice.
After dinner we would gather around her player piano and she would be pumping away and singing as we joined in, enjoying all of our most beloved tunes. "Bicycle Made For Two" still makes me smile when I hear it!
"Daisy...Daisy...give me your answer do. I'm half crazy..." Gotta love it!
Sometimes after we were done at the piano, more cookies were in order and then Aunt Edie would puff herself up and say, "Do you hear that? I hear teeth just screaming to get out!" At which point she would thrust her bottom false teeth out and chase us around her house making monster noises! We knew it was a game, but we sure did brush our teeth well when at Aunt Edie's house!
Aunt Edie was a wonderful part of my life growing up. I miss her.
