Delana (Bennett) Mann was born in 1801 to John Thomas Bennett and Mary (Slafter) Bennett, and had siblings Lydia Bennett Spencer, Mary Eunice (Bennett) Mann, Naomi (Bennett) Bacon, Ruth Fellows (Bennett) Oviatt, Stephen J. Bennett, and Lois (Bennett) Cool. Delana Mann died at age 70 years old in 1871.

In 1801, in the year that Delana (Bennett) Mann was born, on November 10th, the state of Kentucky outlawed dueling. The oath of office for Kentucky has since said: ""I, being a citizen of this State, have not fought a duel with deadly weapons within this State nor out of it, nor have I sent or accepted a challenge to fight a duel with deadly weapons, nor have I acted as second in carrying a challenge, nor aided or assisted any person thus offending, so help me God."

In 1815, at the age of only 14 years old, Delana was alive when between April 5th and 12th, Mount Tambora in the Dutch East Indies erupted, killing over 92,000 people and propelling volcanic ash into the upper atmosphere throughout the world. This caused what was called "The Year Without a Summer." In some places in the northern hemisphere, the eruption caused snow in June and July. There were widespread crop failures and resulting starvation in many parts of the world.
