STEINHATCHEE - DeAlva Gryder Decker of Steinhatchee died Wednesday at Miami Valley Hospital in Dayton, Ohio, following a long illness. She was 85. Mrs. Decker was born in Dublin, Texas, and moved to Steinhatchee 25 years ago. She was a homemaker. She was preceded in death by her husband, J.H. Decker; a son, Charles Dean Decker; and a brother, Woodrow Gryder. Survivors include a son, Jerry Decker of Dayton; two granddaughters, Kathleen Decker of Dayton and Charlene Lynch of Carbondale, Kansas; and two great-grandchildren. Published in The Gainesville Sun, Friday, March 10, 1995

In 1910, in the year that DeAlva Gryder was born, Halley's comet, which returns past the earth every 75 - 76 years was observed photographically for the first time. Two fortuitous events occurred - photography had been invented since the last time the comet had passed and the comet was relatively close. There was panic because one astronomer claimed that the gas from its tail "would impregnate the atmosphere and possibly snuff out all life on the planet." People bought gas masks, "anti-comet pills" and "anti-comet umbrellas".

In 1948, she was 38 years old when on January 30th, Mahatma Gandhi was assassinated in New Delhi by a member of a Hindu nationalist party who thought that Gandhi was too accommodating to Muslims. The man, Nathuram Godse, shot Gandhi 3 times. He died immediately. The shooter was tried, convicted, and hung in November 1949.
