His parents immigrated to the United States and arrived in New York, New York on December 13, 1920 after the birth of their first child, David's older sister Esther Elaine Eileen Kattleman (born 1919). He grew up living in Brooklyn, Kings, New York. On January 3, 1950, he married Judith Rachel Ruth Esterson (1928-2014) in Montréal, Quebec, Canada. During their marriage, they had two sons, Dr. Barry and Martin and lived in Montréal, Québec, Canada. Kattleman passed away on April 22, 1995, in Canada at the age of 74.

He joined the Branch Immaterial - Warrant Officers, which was a unique branch of the Army that was created to allow for the appointment of warrant officers, who held specialized technical skills and were responsible for managing and maintaining critical military equipment. As a private in this branch, Kattleman likely received basic training in military discipline and tactics, as well as specific technical training related to his role in the Army. Kattleman's terms of enlistment were "For the Duration of the War or Other Emergency, Plus Six Months, Subject to the Discretion of the President or Otherwise According to Law." This meant that he was committed to serving in the military for as long as the war lasted, plus an additional six months after the war's end. However, his service could be extended or shortened at the discretion of the President or according to changes in the law.

    On Saturday April 22, 1995. Most dearly beloved husband and best friend of Ruth Esterson, devoted and adored father of Dr. Barry and Martin. Dear brother and brother-in-law of Elaine and Dr. Max Tischler, Judy and Robert Resnick, Fred and Vicki Esterson and the late Esther Esterson. He was also a beloved uncle, great-uncle, wonderful friend and neighbor. Funeral service on Tuesday April 25 at 12 noon from Paperman and Sons, 3888 Jean Talon West. Burial at the Beth Zion Congregation Cemetery Section, Eternal Cemetery, Beaconsfield. Shiva private. In lieu of gifts or flowers, donations in his memory may be made to the Coronary Care Unit Fund C/O The Jewish General Hospital Foundation 340-8251.
