Daniel Swomley died at age 75 years old on May 28, 1964, and was buried at Ft. Sam Houston National Cemetery Section W Site 3303 1520 Harry Wurzbach Road, in San Antonio, Tx.

In 1888, in the year that Daniel Neely Swomley was born, Irishman John Robert Gregg published a pamphlet in the U.S., teaching his first version of shorthand - Gregg shorthand. When he improved on the first version and published it 5 years later, Gregg shorthand became popular.

In 1892, at the age of just 4 years old, Daniel was alive when on January 1st, Ellis Island opened to process immigrants. 700 passed through on the first day - in the first year, 450,000 were processed. The processing center was originally a 3 story wooden building - with outbuildings - that burned down a few years later.
