Introduction

Dan Duryea was born and raised in White Plains NY. He graduated from White Plains High School in 1924 and then attended Cornell University in Ithaca NY. While at Cornell, he was elected into the Spinx Head Society, a senior honor society. Majoring in English, he also had a strong interest in drama and in his senior year succeeded another well-known actor, Franchot Tone, as president of the drama society. After college, Dan became an advertising executive to satisfy his parents' desires. But the job was stressful and he had a heart attack after working 6 years. It took him a year to recover and when he did, he switched to his first love, acting. On stage, in film, and later on tv, he was always a memorable part of the production. He married Helen Bryan in 1932 and they were married until she died in 1967. They had 2 sons, one of whom - Peter - became an actor. The other son, Richard, became a talent agent. When he died in 1968, the New York Times noted the passing of a "heel with sex appeal". This wasn't based on his personal life but rather on the memorable roles he played. His headstone reads: "DAN DURYEA 1907-1968 OUR POP A MAN EVERYBODY LOVED."
