D. Wallace died at age 54 years old on April 20, 1982 in Danville, and was buried on April 22, 1982 at Highland Burial Park N Main St, in Danville.

    D. T. Wallace The funeral for D. T. Wallace, 54, of 10 Garland St. will be held 2 P.M. Thursday at Barker Funeral Chapel by the Rev. W. L. Wade. Interment will be in Highland Burial Park. The family will receive friends from 7-9 P.M. Wednesday at the funeral home and at other times, will be at the residence. Wallace died early Tuesday at his residence. He had been in declining health for the past year. He was born August 1, 1927, in Pittsylvania County, V.A., a son of the late Fred N. Wallace. He spent his entire life in Danville, V.A., where he was employeed in No. 8 Dress, Dan River Inc. for 35 years. He was of the Baptist faith. Survivors include his wife, Janie Ridgeway Wallace, of the residence; two sons, Danny Ray Wallace, Danville, V.A., Route 2, and Sammie Lee Wallace, Troutville, V.A.; three brothers, Henry Wallace and Willie Wallace, both of Danville, V.A., and Bobby Wallace, Mouth Hermon; one sister, Jean Alderson, Danville, V.A.; and six grandchildren.

In 1927, in the year that D. T. Wallace was born, the first "talkie" (a movie with music, songs, and talking), The Jazz Singer, was released. Al Jolson starred as a cantor's son who instead of following in his father's footsteps as expected, becomes a singer of popular songs. Banished by his father, they reconcile on his father's deathbed. It was a tear-jerker and audiences went wild - especially when they heard the songs. Thus begun the demise of silent films and the rise of "talkies".

In 1931, he was merely 4 years old when in March, “The Star Spangled Banner” officially became the national anthem by congressional resolution. Other songs had previously been used - among them, "My Country, 'Tis of Thee", "God Bless America", and "America the Beautiful". There was fierce debate about making "The Star Spangled Banner" the national anthem - Southerners and veterans organizations supported it, pacifists and educators opposed it.
