Cyril Michael Monahan of Buffalo, Erie County, NY was born on July 9, 1909 in Saint John, Saint John County, New Brunswick Canada to Patrick Walter Monahan and Julia (Hayes) Monahan. He had a brother Ronald Joseph-Francis Monahan. Cyril Monahan died at age 88 years old on March 16, 1998 in Buffalo, Erie County, New York United States.

  • Introduction

    Cyril Monahan 1909 -1998 was born in Saint John New Brunswick,Canada. His parents were Patrick Walter Monahan and Julia ( Hayes) Monahan. He was orphaned at 3 years of age after his mother passed in 1912. He spent a number of his young years in an orphanage in Saint John and also at foster parents in a small area north of Fredericton NB. At a young age he emigrated to the United States. He as far as is known lived in New York City with a sister for a period and then eventually moved to Buffalo NY where he lived with his sister Mary and her husband. ( Andrew Veros). Cyril worked for number of years with New York Central Railroad, as a ticket salesman in Buffalo. In later years he lived in his sister,s house after she and her husband passed ( Mary in 1983). Eventually he moved to nursing homes in the early 1990's.He passed in 1998 while in a nursing home. Cyril as a pastime enjoyed off-track horse race betting. He also liked to travel and enjoyed his cars especially a 1950 or 1952 Chevrolet. He for a period in the 1980's had as a pet a large Doverman Pincer dog named Kelly.

In 1909, in the year that Cyril Monahan was born, the U.S. penny was changed to the Abraham Lincoln design. The Lincoln penny was so popular that it soon had to be rationed and it sold on the secondary market for a quarter.
