She married Einar O Bruseth on October 18, 1918 in Coeur d'Alene, Kootenai County, and had children Carol (Bruseth) Warner and O. J. Bruseth. Clara Bruseth died at age 61 years old on June 7, 1958 in Clarkston, Asotin County, WA.

  • Introduction

    Mrs. Clara Olive Bruseth, 61, 401 Bridge St., Clarkston, died about 1 p.nm. yesterday. She had been ill since the first of the year. Mrs. Bruseth was born March 13, 1897, at Forest, Idaho. She had lived in the Lewiston-Clarkston area since 1926. Mrs. Bruseth was a member of Our Savior's Lutheran Church, the American Legion Auxiliary and a charter member of the Clarkston War Mothers. Survivors include her husband, Einer "Ed" Bruseth at home, a son, O.J. Bruseth of Richland; a daughter, Mrs. W.S. "Carol" Hamilton, Echo, Ore.; three brothers, Isaac Lien at Los Angeles, Henry LIen at Kendrick, and Emret at Wisdom, Mont., a sister, Mrs. E.T. "Anna" Lond at Kendrick and three grandsons.

In 1897, in the year that Clara Olive (Lien) Bruseth was born, on September 21st, editor and publisher Francis P. Church responded to a letter to the editor from Virginia O'Hanlon, 8 years old. Virginia's father had told her that "If you see it in The Sun, it's so." So she wrote to the Sun, asking if there was a Santa Claus. Church responded with the now famous editorial "Yes, Virginia, there is a Santa Claus".

In 1906, when she was just 9 years old, abolitionist and suffragette leader Susan B. Anthony died, before women's right to vote nationally was realized (in 1920). She, along with Elizabeth Cady Stanton, founded the National American Woman Suffrage Association which later became the League of Women Voters. She died at the age of 86 of heart failure and pneumonia in her home in New York.
