  • Introduction

    Family arrived in Vancouver in 1896. SOUTH, Charles John, J. P. - Superintendent under Children's Protection Act of British Columbia, Hon. Representative in British Columbia Royal Humane Society, London, Eng. General Secretary British Columbia Society for Prevention Cruelty to Animals. Mr. C. J. W. South, ex-magistrate of Vancouver, and for many years connected with shipping interests in Brisbane, died last month. In the course of tribute to the deceased the "Daily Province" of Vancouver, wrote: "Mr. C. J. Smith will long be remembered in Vancouver, and indeed, in many parts of the world to which boys and girls trained at the Vancouver Children's Home may have emigrated, as the personifications of benevolent kindliness with an unobtrusive desire to help others to the limit of his ability and beyond it . . .In him the city has lost one of the most unselfish of her citizens....

In 1850, in the year that Charles John Wesley South was born, on July 10th, President Millard Fillmore - previously Vice-President to Zachary Taylor - became the 13th President of the United States. Taylor had become ill with a still unknown intestinal ailment on July 4th and died on July 9th as a result. He had been a little over a year into his term.
