Charles was a VERY kind & wonderful person. Extremely knowledgeable & talented. The little brother that I never had.
This is the 1st that I have been able to bring myself to do this since he died the day before my 29 year-old Son. When I got the call from his mother, Lois, I was stunned. I wanted to comfort her but I was in the middle of my own grief & arrangements that had to be made. After things settled down for me, Lois & I had a chance to talk, I was able to share memories with her of his time in Delaware. I wanted her to know just how kind he was to his friends.
I told her of the times that we would have dinner together, work on my house together & play tricks on each other. I remember the new TV set that his parents had gotten for him. I was there to help him set it up. He was SO happy & it had a remote control! While he was in the bathroom, I set the "sleep" setting, for the TV to shut off in an hour. I went home, sure enough, the TV shut-off & he called me in a frenzy. My TV QUIT !!! After I got done laughing, I told him to just turn it back on & told him what I had done. He was so happy that it wasn't broken that he couldn't be mad at me.
We always made the holidays and birthdays special for each other. I knew that his family was a distance away, so I took it upon myself to make sure that he had cookies, candy & some little gifts to open. He was always so grateful for whatever he got but had to out-do me. One time I asked him what he wanted for his birthday (he always made it impossible), he wanted a BMW....OK, I found a BMW Matchbox Car & some fertilizer, with instructions to "Feed it & Water it" and someday it might grow to a full-sized car! Then there was the year he wanted a "WOOKIE" (the big tall, furry creature from Star Wars). That was a tough one, it took me over a week to construct, sew & stuff the 7-Foot guy. Charlie could not believe his eyes, he thought that he had finally come-up with something that I couldn't do.
I was an only-child, so he was the little brother that I never had & I am so grateful for that.
It has been over 25 years now since he & my son went on to their final rest. But there isn't a day that goes by that I don't think of them both.
I do hope that this is some comfort to any of his family members that remain.
Sincerely, heart-felt condolences.
