Charles Henry Vizard 1889 - 1964

Charles Henry Vizard of South Yarra Australia was born in 1889 in South Yarra to George Henry Vizard and Emily (Wragg) Vizard. He had siblings Francis Walter Vizard, Jessie Marion (Vizard) Sweetnam, and Emerson Frank Vizard. He married Rose Elizabeth (Rundell) Vizard, and had children Charles Horace Vizard and Beryl Frances Vizard. Charles Vizard died at age 74 years old in April 1964 in Coburg, and was buried on April 13, 1964 Ashes scattered at Fawkner Memorial Park.

In 1889, in the year that Charles Henry Vizard was born, on May 31st, the South Fork Dam collapsed. Located in western Pennsylvania, the dam failed - sending more than 20 million tons of water into the towns below it. The flood killed more than 2,200 people in and around Johnstown. The newly formed Red Cross responded to the disaster.

In 1916, by the time he was 27 years old, in June, the U.S. Congress authorized a plan to expand the armed forces over the next five years. Called the National Defense Act of 1916, the national law expanded the National Guard and Army (the Army added an aviation unit), created the Reserves, and gave the President expanded authority to federalize the National Guard. It also allowed the government to stockpile, in advance, materiel to be used in wartime.
