Charles Corley was born on January 18, 1859 in St Albans, England United Kingdom to William Corley and Eliza (Pratt) Corley, and had siblings Olive Alice (Corley) Wright, Eliza (Corley) Tripp, Emily Corley, Alfred Corley, Sarah Corley, and Eleanor (Corley) Savage. He married Elizabeth Adelaide (Cox) Corley on September 13, 1890, and had children Charles William Corley, Frank Sydney Corley, Dorothy May (Corley) Park, and Cyril Leslie Corley. Charles Corley died at age 90 years old on March 1, 1949 in Winnipeg, MB Canada.

In 1859, in the year that Charles Corley was born, on February 27th, US Congressman Daniel Sickles shot and killed Philip Barton Key - a US. District Attorney and son of Francis Scott Key, writer of the national anthem, for having an affair with his wife. Sickles claimed temporary insanity - the first to do so - and was acquitted.

In 1864, he was merely 5 years old when on June 15th, Arlington National Cemetery was created in Arlington Virginia. 200 acres from the grounds of Robert E. Lee's home were set aside to be a military cemetery. The home and grounds had been in Lee's wife's family - she was a great-granddaughter of Martha Washington.
