Uncover new discoveries and connections today by sharing about people & moments from yesterday.
  • Introduction

Catherine Jemima (Hughes) Dahmer was born in Brigham Iowa Wisconsin to Robert R. Hughes (1872-1928) and Eunice Adele Spears (1872-1945) and had eight siblings. She married Herbert Walter Dahmer (1903-1971) and they had a son and a daughter. Catherine Dahmer was grandmother to serial killer Jeffrey L Dahmer. After Jeffrey was discharged from the military in 1981 he returned to live with his father and stepmother in Ohio, but was sent to live with his grandmother Catherine Dahmer due to his excessive drinking and arrest for disorderly conduct. While living with Catherine, Jeffrey supposedly attended church with his grandmother and helped around the house. Jeffrey lived with Catherine for about 9 years at 2357 S. 57th Street in Milwaukee Wisconsin, but was also eventually thrown out in 1990. Catherine knew her grandson Jeffery was arrested for indecent exposure at a Wisconsin State Fair in 1982, and four years later was again charged with disorderly conduct for being lewd in front of two boys. However, she did not know that Jeffrey had brought back the body of one of his victims and dismembered it at her home. According to some, Catherine was one of the few people who showed affection to Jeffrey.

In 1904, in the year that Catherine Dahmer was born, the World's Fair, officially known as the Louisiana Purchase Exposition, was held in St. Louis, Missouri. Attended by nearly 19.7 million people (and later the subject of a Judy Garland film), the Fair was funded by federal, state and local sources to the tune of $15 million. As the name suggests, the Fair was suggested as a way to celebrate the Louisiana Purchase in 1803. In the past, World's Fairs were a way of bringing new technology to the attention of the masses and this fair was no exception - the use of electricity (the public feared it at the time), personal cars, airplanes, and the electric streetcar were all highlighted.
