Carol Winegar, age 84, of 1766 Indiana Ave. SE, in Huron, died Sunday, March 8, 2009, at her home.
Her funeral service will be at 11:00 a.m. Friday, March 13, at First Presbyterian Church with burial at Restlawn Memory Gardens Cemetery.
Visitation will be Thursday from 1-8 p.m. at Welter Funeral Home with family present from 6-8 p.m.; or Friday morning one hour prior to the service at the church.
Carol Winegar was born Carol Joy Miller on November 11, 1924, to Sam and Mary Eva (Smith) Miller on the family farm south of Miller, SD. She attended country school in Hand County, then attended and graduated from St. Lawrence High School in 1942.
On December 29, 1942, Carol married Earl Winegar at Ft. Pierre, SD. While her husband served in the U.S. Army in the European Theater during World War II, Carol moved to Seattle, WA, and worked at the Boeing Aircraft Company. In 1944, she returned home to Miller and started her post secondary education at Northern State College in Aberdeen where she received her teaching certificate.
She taught school for 3 years at Ree Heights, then 2 years in a country school near Huron, and 25 years at Washington Elementary School in Huron. In 1958, Carol and Earl moved to Huron. During the period of time that Carol was teaching, she continued her education at Huron College and graduated with a B.A. degree in education in 1973. She retired from teaching in 1987.
She was a member of the First Presbyterian Church, Retired Teachers Association, and card clubs.
Her many interests included crocheting, music, reading mystery and western novels, crossword puzzles, bowling, gardening (iris and roses), dancing, and playing cards.
She is survived by 4 sons, Scott (Pam) Winegar of Huron, Terry (Marcia) Winegar of Fairmont, MN, Randy (Jackie) Winegar of Huron, and Pat (Connie) Winegar of Huron; 11 grandchildren, Taunya (Shawn) Martin, Jim (Kristi) Winegar, Lisa Winegar, Kasey Winegar, Damon Winegar, Tabatha (Rob) Weissenburger, Virgil Winegar, Jen (Brett) Miller, Brian Winegar, Stephanie Winegar, and Mary Winegar; 9 great grandchildren, Zoe Martin, Charlie Martin, Thomas Martin, Riley Winegar, Taylor Winegar, Rylie Huisman, Allison Weissenburger, Alex Miller, and Brycen Winegar; 2 sisters-in-law, Cleo Miller of Huron, and Verlyn Miller of Miller.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Earl on December 30, 1983; 3 sisters, Mabel Winegar, Juanita Daly, and Helen Green; 3 brothers; Jim Miller, Sam Miller, and Kenneth Miller; 3 brothers-in-law, Harold Winegar, Bernard Daly, and Bob Green.
