Sir John Campbell was the eldest son of John Campbell, Lt Governor of St Vincent 1845-53 and Hannah Elizabeth Macleod, the daughter of James Macleod, Esq., of Rasay. He married Catherine Syonia Sophia Cavie in 1867 and they had one son, John Bruce Stuart.

Lt. General Sir John Campbell was the son of Sir Archibald Campbell, First Baronet of New Brunswick and his wife, Lady Helen Macdonald. The info above regardng his parents is incorrect. He was killed in Sebastopol in 1855.
