Camille Mary Beck's History: 1964 - 2010

Uncover new discoveries and connections today by sharing about people & moments from yesterday.
  • Introduction

Camille Mary Beck's father was Robert Maupin Beck (1918 - 1992), a clerk in 1961 at Bank of America, known as "Iceberg Slim", and her mother was Betty Mae Shew (1936 - 2009), his common law wife in the 1960s. Wikipedia reports that Robert was a former pimp who later became an author. She had half siblings James, Bellisa, and another half-sister. You can read more about Camille's mother, Betty Mae, at Iceberg Slim’s Wife, Collaborator Dies. Her father was a writer and supposedly wrote "Doom Fox", over which Camille sued her stepmother, saying that the novel is a counterfeit. Camille claimed that her sister Melody and stepmother, Diane, conspired to pass off a book written by her step-mother's brother as "the real thing." Her father had written seven earlier books. The lawsuit and a subsequent film caused an uproar and curiosity about the blended Beck family. In 2016, this post was added to the lore of Camille: Posted December 28, 2016 The inscription on her headstone is: "You were a mother, daughter, my sister and friend. Now you're a beautiful angel in Heaven we'll meet again.....""

Your photo is not Camille Beck
I just Google searched my sister because her death anniversary was January 9th and it's been a while since I've looked her up. The photo on your site is not her. My sister did not go to school in Northern California either. Everything is pretty accurate, but her picture and her education background. Anyway... guess it really doesn't matter, but incase you the site owner or anyone cared. This is not my sister's photo. God Bless

Iceberg Slim’s Wife, Collaborator Dies
The following article appeared on website bet dot com on April 21, 2009:

The woman who helped propel bestselling street fiction author Robert “Iceberg Slim” Beck into literary fame has died. Betty Mae Beck had begun preparing a memoir about her life with Iceberg Slim before she passed away last week due to prolonged illness.

Born in Austin, Texas, Betty Beck met Iceberg Slim in California where they became a couple and eventually had two daughters together. By 1969, she had assisted Beck in writing and publishing "Pimp: The Story of My Life," which influenced author Donald Goines and many writers who followed.

“It took us a great deal of time and work to get to that point,” Betty Beck recalled. “Hell, it took us a lot of getting to know each other and figuring out how we would make a life together, let alone figuring out how to get Bob’s name on the map… A man who people called ‘Iceberg Slim,’ you might imagine, wasn’t always the easiest fellow to live with.”

Betty Beck collaborated on other Slim books, including "Trick Baby," which became a film. Mrs. Beck is featured in the forthcoming documentary "Iceberg Slim: Portrait of a Pimp," featuring actor and rapper Ice T.

This post was on Filmboards.com, supposedly a facebook post on her sister, Misty's facebook:

To the many who have asked me about Camille Beck. I quote Misty's response to these inquiries... "Unfortunately she battled with drug addiction. It is hard to see the question "how did Camille Beck die?" on a google search but also an obvious realization that my fathers work is so much bigger than the family could have ever have imagined. I am sad and pleased at the same time that people saw my BEAUTIFUL sister more than likely on Ice T's doc Portrait of a Pimp. Camille died of a drug overdose. Tragic, surreal, and such a sad ending to a life not yet discovered by her or anyone until now. Sad is an understatement...her death would have literally killed both my mother, and my father. I'm glad they both crossed over and didn't witness the end of the life of their 1st born and precious child. She was the beauty and light in my parents relationship when they embarked on their journey where my father became a talent that has given him the ability to live on in his literature. Now that a film has been made me, my mom, step mom, and sister Camille have sparked an interest in the real man Robert Beck. I'm honored and so sad to answer this question. As her sister I can tell you this..she was caring, undeniably beautiful, smart, funny, engaging, loving, and more importantly, one of the brightest lights in my natural life. A truly beautiful entity that lives on in my heart and hopefully all who get to see her radiant smile, if just for a moment in the doc embrace her spirit and pray for her then it makes her passing feel lighter because it really does weigh on my spirit and soul. Thank you for caring enough to inquire... wow. life is beautiful and so is Camille Mary Beck."
