  • Introduction

    Dr. Curley Julian Parrish was born in Birmingham Alabama to Curley Pleasant and Fannie G. Jokes Parrish. In 1930, Dr. Parrish was 18 and living with his parents and sibling James in Birmingham Alabama. Dad Curley was a cook in a factory. Son Dr. Parrish was a teacher in a public school. In 1940, "Curley" or "Julian" was living in Jefferson City Alabama and working for Social Service, Tenn Coal, & RR Co., in Birmingham. His next of kin was his wife, Florence Marion Parrish. He was 5 ft 9 inches tall nd weighed 191 pounds. He had brown eyes, black hair, and a dark brown complexion. 10 years later, C. Julian, 38, was living in Queens New York with his wife Florence, also 38. and with their children Fannetta, 17, Curley W. (known as Bill) , 15, and Willfred, 6. Dad C.Julian said his employment was "intermittent" because he was working for the state. Wife Florence was a children's counselor for city welfare. Julian was very educated, with kudos too numerous to mention. He was also musically talented and involved. See C Julian Parrish: Obituary to see all of his many accomplishments. Florence and Dr. Parrish had been married for 67 years when he died.

He taught school in Birmingham and conducted private piano lessons and violin instructions for multi-ethnic groups. In 1974, he received a bachelor of arts degree, a multi-discipline degree in sociology, anthropology and psychology. He completed graduate work at N.Y. State University.

    From Find A Grave: Dr. C. Julian Parrish Dr. Parrish, of 1825 St. Julian Pl., died Wednesday. Born in Birmingham, Ala., he was a son of the late C. Pleasant and Fannie Jones Parrish. He studied at Tuskegee Institute and the University of Alabama, where he received an associate degree. In 1931, Dr. Parrish studied at the Alabama State Teachers College. He taught school in Birmingham and conducted private piano lessons and violin instructions for multi-ethnic groups. In 1974, he received a bachelor of arts degree, a multi-discipline degree in sociology, anthropology and psychology. He completed graduate work at N.Y. State University. He directed the N.Y. City-wide chorus and supported Paul Robeson, when he sang "The Ballad for America", in Birmingham, Ala. For five years, he was pianist for Whatley Saxo-Society Orchestra. He organized his own orchestra, Parrish Personality Entertainers, and was the accompanist for the Southern Aires Quartet and the Homer Smith Melodaires. He served in the U.S. Army in 1941 and was stationed at West Point, where he directed the forty voice choral ensemble from 1945-1947. Dr. Parrish studied at the Long Island Conservatory of Music. He continued studies at Columbia University, his areas of concentration were performance skills, choral conducting and arranging classical and religious music. In addition to teaching, he conducted recreational activities for adults and Boy Scout activities; project supervisor for the National Youth Administration (Slossfield in Birmingham, Ala.); statewide supervisor of the NYC Negro Project, head-quartered at Alabama A&M College; employment placement of executive and technical personnel in the NY City Apparel Trades; Occupational Analyst for Manpower Development and Training with the US Department of Labor. After moving to Columbia, he joined Francis Burns, U.M. Church and at his death, was a member of Northminster Presbyterian Church. He served as the Mansion Musician for Governor and Mrs. Dick Riley from 1979-1987. He worked in three states, Alabama, N.Y., S.C., and under the leadership of three governors; Nelson Rockefeller, Malcolm M. Wilson and Dick Riley. A son, William "Bill" predeceased him on August 20, 1999.
