  • Introduction

    Captured by the Japanese army in Timor. The Sydney Morning Herald. 20th May 1940. - USED FATHER'S SWORD. The sword which had belonged to his father during the Great War was used by Lieutenant Brian Primrose to cut the wedding cake after his marriage with Miss Lucy Harbutt, only daughter of Mr. P. Harbutt, and of the late Mrs. Harbutt, of Rahiri, Orange, at St. Michael's Church, Vaucluse, on Saturday afternoon. The wedding was a military one, and appropriately, the cake was decorated with military emblems and a model gun. The bridegroom, who is the second son of the Acting Minister for Health, Mr. H. L. Primrose, and Mrs. Primrose, of Waverton, is a member of the Garrison Artillery.

In 1915, in the year that Brian Hubert Briton Primrose was born, The Birth of a Nation opened in February. A silent film, it was the most ambitious film to date and is considered a classic. Three hours long, it starred Lillian Gish and was directed by D. W. Griffith. The movie was based on the book The Clansman and told the story of two families (one pro-Union and one pro-Confederate) and their relationship during the Civil War and Reconstruction. The KKK was shown as "a heroic force".

In 1927, the first "talkie" (a movie with music, songs, and talking), The Jazz Singer, was released. Al Jolson starred as a cantor's son who instead of following in his father's footsteps as expected, becomes a singer of popular songs. Banished by his father, they reconcile on his father's deathbed. It was a tear-jerker and audiences went wild - especially when they heard the songs. Thus begun the demise of silent films and the rise of "talkies".
