  • Introduction

    Brett was an amazing and beloved teacher at a high school in the Bay Area of CA. His funeral was actually held in the gym of the high school he taught at. The funeral was private, family only, but I remember when we arrived at the funeral, all of the walls were covered top to bottom with get well soon and well wishes from the students of the school. Brett was so close with his brother and parents and it really killed them, Jeff spoke at the funeral and I remember him trying to lighten the mood by saying what Brett would have said if he was there. The men on the Haagenson side of my family have always been of the mindset, "No pain, no gain." We suspect that Brett had been feeling under the weather for a while, but toughed it out because that's what we do. It was a shock to the whole family when Brett was diagnosed with very severe liver cancer, and he died within a few months. He was only 34. It is still a very tender topic, especially for parents Ray and Carole. Jeff got a yin and yang tattoo with the map of the neighborhood they grew up in as its background in honor of his brother.
