Bradley Todd Worledge's History: 1969 - 2008

Uncover new discoveries and connections today by sharing about people & moments from yesterday.
  • Introduction

Bradley Todd Worledge was born in Chico, California on June 25th, 1969. Commonly known as Todd, he was raised in Marysville, California by adopted parents Art and Dee Worledge. After the age of 14, he was placed into the care of the Rebekah Oddfellows Children's Home in Gilroy, California. At school, he met his best friend, Giavanna Soares (aka Susan Lowery) and moved in with her family. The duo were inseparable, and spent the next three years running amok all over California. They spent most of their time in San Francisco, which would become Todd's life-long home. Despite being openly homosexual, Todd and Gia brought a beautiful little girl into the world in April of 1987. Todd was a print model, working with companies such as Macy's and Nordstrom, until he was discovered in 2988 and he then became a runway model. His work took him to San Diego, California where he resided briefly with his good friend Carlos Kinch, of Fresno, California (August 4th,1967 - June 25th, 2010). As Todd's career became successful, he succumbed to the industry pressures of drugs and alcohol, which eventually led to the end of his contract with his agency. He returned to San Francisco, where he discovered himself as Deborah Lee. Unable to reestablish herself as a model, some of her choices over the next ten years led to penal consequences and estrangement from her daughter. There are multiple media sources about Deborah's life online, including news articles, a book, and a documentary. Although Deborah led a colorful life, she was kind, funny, endearing, and brave. People were drawn to her. She was beautiful, vivacious, and a true free spirit. Deborah and her daughter reconnected in 2004 but sadly, she passed away before they had the opportunity to meet again. After Deborah's passing, her daughter hired a private investigator and successfully located Deborah's biological family-something they had planned to do together. Her birth name was Jefferey Benton Taylor. Deborah is survived by her daughter Sarah Taylor of Sacramento, friend Gia Soares of Santa Cruz, sister Cynda Taylor Hopper of New Mexico, as well as nieces and nephews, beloved friends, and two brothers. Deborah was preceded in death by her biological father Jimmy Taylor of Humboldt County, California and biological mother Kimber Vandermueler Taylor Norton of Oregon. Deborah Lee Worledge appeared in 2008's Louis Theroux: Behind Bars

Louis Theroux has paid tribute to a subject of one of his documentaries after discovering she passed away a year after their interview.

During his latest series Life on the Edge, the filmmaker discovered that transgender inmate Deborah Lee Worledge was released one year after appearing in 2008’s Behind Bars. “The following year, after I filmed, Deborah I guess was back inside and then released,” he said in last night’s (September 20) episode. “‘Today’s a different day’ – that’s the pull quote. Deborah Lee Worledge was released from jail. She died of a drug overdose on 4 September, 2008, two days later. She is missed by many.”

Recalling his memories of her, Theroux said: “She had a sort of romantic notion of being an outlaw. She was the one who said to me, ‘It’s like in the movies there’s cops and there’s robbers, and we’re the robbers’. “She seemed to have seen the streets as a more accepting place than – as it were – mainstream society. There’s a kind of self-respect in aspects of street code. It might seem self-destructive, but in other ways it’s the best they can do in the situation they’re in.”

Theroux recently admitted regret at how he addressed Worledge during their interview, recalling that he asked her whether she “considered herself a woman”.

“It is completely in the context of the time, kind of unexceptionable exchange, but now I would have phrased it properly,” he added to UniLad. “‘Do you identify as a woman?’ Oh, you use a different language.”

“There’s moments where because of the nature of sensitivities now, and how much more educated we are, the conversation would take place in a different way,” he added.

Life on the Edge looks back at Theroux’s 25-year long career, with the documentarian explaining that he wanted to “find out what happened to some of the contributors, update their stories, and see what all these many hours of making TV might add up to.”
