Bertha Starkus' History: 1910 - 1985

Uncover new discoveries and connections today by sharing about people & moments from yesterday.
  • Introduction

Bertha Starkus was my English teacher in Mason City, Iowa Highschool in the tenth or eleventh grade, about 1956. She commuted from Sheffield, and I believe she was born there. I see notice that a "Bertha Starkus" was the inspiration and founder of Epilogue Players, a dramatic group for seniors, founded in 1976 in Indianapolis, Indiana. It's easy to believe that she would be the same person. In class, she didn't just teach, she prompted us to do better, be better.

In 1910, in the year that Bertha Starkus was born, the Boy Scouts of America was incorporated. U.S. publisher W.D. Boyce was visiting England when he became lost in the London fog. An unknown Boy Scout helped him find his way out, declining a tip (he said that he was a Boy Scout and was doing his good deed for the day). Boyce was so impressed that he incorporated the Boy Scouts of America when he returned home. Its purpose was "to teach boys patriotism, courage, self-reliance, and kindred values."

In 1939, by the time she was 29 years old, in May, Disney's Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, the first full-length animated film, reached a total international gross of $6.5 million which made it (to then) the most successful sound film of all time. First released in December 1937, it was originally dubbed "Disney's Folly" but the premiere received a standing ovation from the audience. At the 11th Academy Awards in February 1939, Walt Disney won an Academy Honorary Award - a full-size Oscar statuette and seven miniature ones - for Snow White.
