    Berniece, age 21, told the 1940 Federal census taker that she had completed the second year of high school. She had attended Franklin High School in Portland, Oregon, where she was on the Almanac staff and the post staff.

    Berniece Ione (McKay ) Harding was born on July 16th, 1918 in La Grande, Oregon to John Duncan McKay (1889 - 1961) and Libby Mildred Lucas (1899 - 1927). She had one brother, Eugene John "Gene" McKay (1920 - 2000). Berniece I. McKay, age 16, married Henry Harold Harding (1909 - 1997), age 25, on August 22nd, 1934 and they had one son, Troy Eugene Harding (1935 - 1935). Troy died at the age of two months and 10 days from spina bifida. They then had two more children.
