Belle D Rugh's History: 1908 - 2011

  • Introduction

In her own words. A letter Belle wrote to Betty Rugh Price, March 1980. I got to thinking about this Rugh family, which I joined so long ago and which I helped to augment. What are the traits in this family which charm so many of us, with such lasting and cumulative effects? Of course the list would be long but I can think of a couple of outstanding ones. First, non-conformity. None of the Rughs I have known have been conformists. Basically this makes them interesting- and unpredictable. Even mystifying - and totally endearing. Another outstanding trait is the Rugh interest in people. All sorts of people: the visiting celebrity and the garbage man, the Chinese sage, and the little Arab messenger boy; relatives, and the lucky fellow who sits down next to a Rugh on the bus. Other traits, like fondness for discutation on almost anything (you take that side and I'll take this!), a love of the outdoors, and in general a cosmic outlook on life and the future - to paraphrase Mrs. Browning, 'How shall I know the ways?' There's also this taste for monogamy, or is it that the people they marry tend to be retentive - we know when we've got a good thing. (Even Menchen said that: the normal man no more wants two wives than he wants two noses or two watches.") You may flaunt your 75 years, and pretend to be a matriarch, but all of us past 70 are in on the secret, and know that We are still the same person. If not more so .... Don't change.

Tennessee had enacted a law that said it was "unlawful to teach human evolution in any state-funded school". William Jennings Bryan headed the prosecution and Clarence Darrow headed the defense.
