    Barbara W. Shelton Barbara Wallace Shelton, 56, of Suffolk, V.A., died June 18, 1999. Born May 30, 1943 in Mullens, W.V. she was the daughter of Shirley Elinor Zeigler Wallace of Suffolk, V.A., and the late Douglas Dee Wallace Sr. and sister of the late Douglas Dee Wallace Jr. Mrs. Shelton was a graduate of Suffolk High School, received her associate of science degree from Stratford College in Danville, V.A., her bachelor of science degree from Old Dominion University and her master's in Education from Old Dominion University. She served as a classroom teacher in Chesapeake and Suffolk City Schools. Mrs. Shelton served for 22 years on staff at Nansemond-Suffolk Academy and for the last several years she was the Director of Admissions. She was a member of Main Street United Methodist Church. Beside her mother, she is survived by her husband, C. C. Shelton; sons, Charles Christopher Shelton, and his wife, Tanya Robinson Shelton, of Richmond, V.A., Clifton Shawn Shelton of Richmond, V.A., sister, Kay Wallace Best and her husband, Lewis Best, Sandra Nunn Wallace of South Boston, V.A. The graveside service will be held Monday at 11 A.M. by the Rev. Dr. Alan Felumlee in Cedar Hill Cemetery. The family will receive friends in the R. W. Baker and Co. Funeral Home Sunday from 7 to 8:30 P.M. Memorial donations may be made to Main Street United Methodist Church, 202 N. Main St., Suffolk, V.A. 23434, or the Nansemond-Suffolk Academy, 3373 Pruden Blvd., Suffolk, V.A. 23434.

In 1943, in the year that Barbara Gail (Wallace) Shelton was born, on June 20th through June 22nd, the Detroit Race Riot erupted at Belle Isle Park. The rioting spread throughout the city (made worse by false rumors of attacks on blacks and whites) and resulted in the deployment of 6,000 Federal troops. 34 people were killed, (25 of them black) - mostly by white police or National Guardsmen, 433 were wounded (75 percent of them black) and an estimated $2 million of property was destroyed. The same summer, there were riots in Beaumont, Texas and Harlem, New York.

In 1952, at the age of merely 9 years old, Barbara was alive when on February 6th, George VI of England died from a coronary thrombosis and complications due to lung cancer. His eldest daughter, age 25, immediately ascended the throne as Elizabeth II and her coronation was on June 2 1953.
