He was in a relationship with Alma Nettie (Holifield) Smart, and had children Royce Lee Smart, James Mervin Smart, Charles Douglas Smart, and James Earl Smart. Aubrey Smart died at age 48 years old on February 10, 1959 in Liberty, Liberty County.
