    Aubrey C. Staas (nee Barrineau), age 88 of Cherry Hill, passed away peacefully at home on Monday August 17th 2009. Mrs. Staas was born in Charleston, SC and had been a longtime resident of Cherry Hill. She was a congregant of The Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints Church in Cherry Hill and had worked as a bus driver for the Cherry Hill Twp. Board of Education for over 10 years. Mrs. Staas is the wife of the late Robert V. Staas, Sr. and is the mother of Marie & her husband Sam Horton of Cherry Hill, Douglas & his wife Bonnie Staas of Spring Hill, FL,the late Robert V. Staas, Jr. and mother-in-law of the late Tina Henderson, sister-in-law Helen Staas of Oaklyn, NJ and the lifelong friend of Gladys Runyon of Cherry Hill. She is also survived by her daughter-in-law Judy Quinn and her brother Leroy & his wife June Barrineau of Charleston, SC. Mrs. Staas is the proud grandmother of 11 and great grandmother of 9. Relatives and friends are invited to a memorial ceremony on Saturday at 1 PM at The Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints Church Evesham Rd., Cherry Hill. Inturnment will be held privately.

In 1921, in the year that Aubrey C Staas was born, the silent film The Sheik, directed by George Melford and starring Rudolph Valentino and Agnes Ayres (also featuring Adolphe Menjou) debuted on October 21st. Critics weren't enthusiastic but the public loved it - in the first few weeks 125,000 people had seen the movie - and it eventually exceeded $1 million in ticket sales. And Rudolph Valentino, an Italian American, became the heartthrob of a female generation.

In 1933, when she was merely 12 years old, the day after being inaugurated, the new President, Franklin Roosevelt, declared a four-day bank holiday to stop people from withdrawing their money from shaky banks (the bank run). Within 5 days of his administration, the Emergency Banking Act was passed - reorganizing banks and closing insolvent ones. In his first 100 days, he asked Congress to repeal Prohibition (which they did), signed the Tennessee Valley Authority Act, signed legislation that paid commodity farmers to leave their fields fallow, thus ending surpluses and boosting prices, signed a bill that gave workers the right to unionize and bargain collectively for higher wages and better working conditions as well as suspending some antitrust laws and establishing a federally funded Public Works Administration, and won passage of 12 other major laws that helped the economy.
