In 1916, in the year that Arties Daniels was born, the U.S. National Park Service - part of the Department of the Interior - was created by an act of Congress in August. The Park Service was charged with the dual role of "preserving the ecological and historical integrity of the places entrusted to its management while also making them available and accessible for public use and enjoyment". In 1931, at the age of merely 15 years old, Arties was alive when in March, “The Star Spangled Banner” officially became the national anthem by congressional resolution. There was fierce debate about making "The Star Spangled Banner" the national anthem - Southerners and veterans organizations supported it, pacifists and educators opposed it.
