Arthur John Holdaway 1881 - 1958

Arthur John Holdaway was born in 1881 in England to James Walter Holdaway and Lucy Annie (Roberts) Holdaway, and had siblings Walter Thomas Holdaway, Charles Holdaway, Frank Richard Holdaway, Frederick Holdaway, Edith May (Holdaway) Back, and William James Holdaway. He married Eva Pearl (Moore) Holdaway, and they had a child Harold William Holdaway. Arthur's partner was Eliza (Hicks) Holdaway, and they had children Eileen Gladys (Holdaway) Brunker and Violet Ruth Holdaway. Arthur Holdaway died at age 76 years old on November 14, 1958 at Eastwood, in Sydney, NSW Australia.

    HOLDAWAY, Arthur John. - Nov. 14th, 1958. (suddenly), of 88 Tarrants Ave, Eastwood, loved father of Eileen (Mrs. Brunker) and Harold, father-in-law of Kenneth and Norma, grandfather of Patricia, Janice, Graham, Anne and Marcelle, brother of Charles and Frank. Aged 77 years.

In 1881, in the year that Arthur John Holdaway was born, on October 26th, the "Gunfight at the O.K. Corral" happened in Tombstone, Arizona. The gunfight lasted only 30 seconds - the Earps and Doc Holliday on one side and the "Cowboys" on the other side. The McLaury brothers and Billy Clanton of the Cowboys were killed. Two of the Earp brothers and Doc Holliday were wounded.

In 1904, Arthur was 23 years old when the "Teddy's Bear" was first produced. After seeing a political cartoon of President Teddy Roosevelt refusing to kill a clubbed and tied up bear, Jewish Russian immigrant Morris Michtom - who owned a candy shop and sold stuffed animals that he and his wife made at night at the store - made a "Teddy's Bear" and put it in his shop's window. The stuffed bears were an immediate success and Michtom and his wife went on to found the Ideal Novelty and Toy Co.
