The Examiner. Launceston. Tasmania. 28th March 1934. - AMAZING CAREER. Colonel Arthur Lynch, whose death in London was reported in yesterday's issue of "The Examiner," was one of the most amazing of Australians. He was sentenced to death for high treason, but was pardoned by the King, and lived to take his seat in the British House of Commons. A graduate of arts, civil engineering, surgery, and electric science; fluent in six languages and a practising journalist in most of the countries of the Old and New World; leader of a brigade of irregulars against the British in the Boer War, and a Colonel in the British army in 1918; elected to Parliament, arrested for high treason and sentenced to death, only to be released, and later elected to the House of Commons. - These are some of the exploits of the amazing career of Colonel Arthur Lynch, who was born at Smythesdale, Victoria, in 1861. Colonel Lynch was one of the most remarkable men that Australia has produced. In the intervals of his adventures he produced novels, poetry, criticism and studies in biography and history. He published scientific works in English, French, and Russian. He wrote on philosophy, ethics, and psychology. He even challenged a couple of years ago the truth of the Einstein theory of relativity. He has left, too, a fascinating autobiography - "My Life Story" - which he published in 1924. When trouble with the Boers was brewing , Lynch, who sympathised with them, went to South Africa, met Botha, and proposed that he should be given a command. Forming the "Second Irish Brigade" from all sorts of elements sympathetic to the Boers, he fought with them at Glencoe, Laing's Nek, and round Johannesburg, later on being commissioned by President Kruger to go to America to enlist support there for the Boer cause, where he formed a close friendship with President Roosevelt. - Returning to Ireland after the war , he stood again for Galway, and was this time elected with a large majority, but before he could take his seat he was arrested for treason
