Annie (Webster) Turner of Footscray, City of Maribyrnong County, VIC Australia was born in 1855 in Melbourne. She was married to Samuel Escort Turner in 1879, and had children Albert Escort Turner, Lawrence Frank Turner, Walter James Turner, Jessie Lavinia (Turner) Bayley, Ethel Talbot Turner, Arnold Samuel Turner, William Frederick Turner, Annie Maud Turner, and Nellie Frances Turner. Annie Turner died at age 80 years old in 1935 in Footscray.

In 1855, in the year that Annie Webster Turner was born, on March 3rd, Congress appropriated $30,000 to create the U.S. Camel Corps. The idea was to use camels as pack animals in the Southwest and 34 camels were bought. But the Army wasn't enthusiastic about the idea and after the Civil War the Camel Corps was entirely abandoned.

In 1865, she was just 10 years old when on April 9th, Confederate Army General Robert E. Lee surrendered to the Union Army at Appomattox Court House. Lee's surrender led to a series of surrenders in the Confederacy and in 1866 President Johnson issued a "Proclamation—Declaring that Peace, Order, Tranquility, and Civil Authority Now Exists in and Throughout the Whole of the United States of America".
