Annie Mary McVicar (Cameron) Hodgson 1877 - 1942

Annie Mary (Cameron) Hodgson was born in 1877 to Hugh Ewen Cameron and Annie Mary (Ohrens) Cameron, and had siblings Viva Dorothy Jane (Cameron) Firth, Angus Cameron, Catherine McRae, Dougald Cameron, Johan Elsie (Cameron) Mankey, Keith Cameron, Ina May (Cameron) McKenzie, Donald Valentine Cameron, and Allan Leopold Cameron. She married Sholto Douglas Hodgson Jr, and had children Ronald Sholto Hodgson, Caroline Mary (Hodgson) McNaughton, Hugh Douglas Hodgson, Leonard William Hodgson Sgt., and Jack Hodgson. Annie Hodgson died at age 64 years old on October 22, 1942 in Brunswick East, Moreland City County, VIC Australia, and was buried at Fawkner Memorial Park 1187 Sydney Rd, in Fawkner.

    Married 1903. The Camperdown Chronicle. 27th October 1942. MRS. S. D. HODGSON. A NATIVE of Newfield and a former resident of Camperdown, Mrs. Annie Mary McVicar Hodgson, wife of Mr. Sholto Douglas Hodgson, died at her home in East Brunswick, on Thursday. Born 65 years ago, she was the daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. Hugh Cameron, "Fernbank," Newfield, her brother Mr. Allan Cameron, now lives on the property. Mrs. Hodgson lived in Camperdown for about 15 years. SONS ON SERVICE. One son, Sergt. Leonard Hodgson is a prisoner of war in Malaya; another, Pte. Jack Hodgson is still on service; Hugh is in the A.M.F. there are three other sons, her only daughter, Caroline ( Mrs. J McNaughton ) lives at Whitfield, Miss Anne McRae ( Camperdown ) is a niece.

HODGSON.- On October 22, at her residence, 30 Hardy St., East Brunswick, Annie Mary McVicar, beloved wife of Sholto Douglas Hodgson, loving mother of Ronald, Hugh, Caroline ( Mrs. J. McNaughton ), Leonard and Jack, aunt of Mrs. A. McCrae, Camperdown, aged 65 years.

In 1877, in the year that Annie Mary McVicar (Cameron) Hodgson was born, on March 2nd, the U.S. presidential election of 1876 was ended with the selection of Rutherford B. Hayes as the winner. Samuel J. Tilden had won the popular vote in November 1876 but 20 votes in the electoral college were in dispute. An informal agreement was made in which Hayes agreed to remove federal troops from South Carolina, Florida, and Louisiana, ending Reconstruction in the South. So, on March 4th, Rutherford B. Hayes became the 19th President of the United States.
