Anna Josephine (Brown) McAlpine's Confirmation in 1936
This photo was taken at 1465 Dwight Street in Holyoke, Massachusetts after my mother made her Confirmation in 1936. Mom was 3/4 yuchi/Creek Native American born March 16, 1924 in Sapulpa, Creek County, Oklahoma and taken away from her paternal grandparents, Chief Samuel William Brown, Jr. (June 9, 1867) and his wife Mattie May Payne-Brown (Dec. 20, 1886). She was raised by Patrick James and Annie (Doran) McAlpine, Sr. because their son Martin J. McAlpine (Nov. 1, 1896) married a Creek Indian Woman, Mary Josephine Wadsworth (Feb. 13, 1903)who was pregnant by Chief Samuel William Brown. Jr.'s son, Samuel Wayne Brown, Sr. (Sept. 17, 1908)and since she was only married the Indian Way to Samuel Wayne Brown, Sr. the McAlpine Family took claim to my mother and she was married in Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Sapulpa, Creek County, Oklahoma to their son Martin after being forced to give up her Native American Religion. Back in those days the white men and women married into the Indian Tribes to get their land they were allotted by the Government. Shortly after marrying my grandmother, martin left her.
