Andrew Samuel "Andy" Griffith was born in Mount Airy, North Carolina in 1926 and died on Roanoke Island, North Carolina on July 3, 2012, but he was known the world over for his acting and singing. Most beloved for the Andy Griffith Show (1960 to 1968), he also starred in Matlock (1986 - 1995) and many, many other television shows as well as movie. He was also a musician and singer, often performing on his own television shows.

In this picture from the Andy Griffith Show (produced by Sheldon Leonard), Sheriff Andy is with his onscreen son, Opie - a very young Ron Howard who grew up to become an actor, producer, and director - just like Andy. The show was filmed in California but was set in Mayberry (a fictional town), North Carolina - an homage to Andy's home state.
