Andrew Grotte of Fairmont, Martin County, Minnesota was born on May 30, 1888 in Norway, and had a brother Edward Grotte. He was in a relationship with Laura (Endresen) Grotte, and had children Helen G. (Grotte) Swanson, Stanley Norman Grotte, Donald Berger Grotte, Elsie Lucille (Grotte) Holmes, and Russell Alan Grotte. Andrew Grotte died at age 78 years old on May 28, 1967 in Fairmont, and was buried in 1967 at Lakeside Cemetery 900 N Fairlakes Ave, in Fairmont.

In Norway, Andrew was a goat herder. In the US, he as a builder of homes and started and ran the Fairmont Cast Stone company. The "Cast Stone" was a concrete redi-mix plant and made concrete blocks for foundations. He even made decorative blocks with bits of colored glass in them that were used in several buidings constructed in Fairmont, MN. The company also made decorative patio blocks and borders.

In 1888, in the year that Andrew Grotte was born, on July 25th, a court stenographer from Salt Lake City - Frank Edward McGurrin - decisively beat the competition in a typing contest in Ohio. He was supposedly the only person who used touch typing and is believed to have invented the method. Touch typing is ubiquitous now - but Frank's win is what convinced everyone that the method was good!

In 1891, Andrew was only 3 years old when on June 25th, in the July issue of The Strand Magazine in London, Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's character Sherlock Holmes appeared in a series of short stories for the first time. Doyle eventually wrote 4 novels and 56 short stories with Holmes as the main character.
