She had siblings Henry Thomas Downs, Doris Downs, Alice Matilda Downs, Annie Downs, Irene Florence Downs, Arthur Downs, John William Downs, and Norman Edwin Downs. She married Hector Bigland Paterson in 1917, and had a child Hector Norman Patterson. Amy Patterson died at age 84 years old on November 29, 1980 in Parkdale.

She died at the age of 86 of heart failure and pneumonia in her home in New York.
