They do not look very happy. Also I wonder why the man is sitting and the woman is standing. Any ideas?

It was quite common for people not to smile for photographs then. On the other hand Amanda may have been unhappy that she couldn't marry the Italian man she wanted to because her parents did not approve(according to family story). In old wedding photos I have often seen the man sitting and the woman standing - can't say why.
