2 teens charged with strangling 14-year-old girl
Two male teen-agers were in custody Friday night in connection with the strangulation of Amanda Howell, 14. They are charged with her murder.

Amanda, a student at the private School for Educational Enrichment, 7310 Bishop Flores, was reported missing January 14 from her West Side Home. The next day sheriff's deputies were called to a canal bank in Socorro after students going home from school discovered a body off Worsham Road. El Paso County sheriff's detectives said Howell apparently knew the two unidentified juveniles, who are both 15. "They are people who were in her circle of acquaintances," Detective Sergeant Andres Ortega said. "I don't know if these people were in her intimate circle of friends."

One of the suspects was taken into custody Thursday, and the other was brought in Friday. While officers are confident they have Amanda Howell's killers in custody, Ortega said, the investigation is far from over. "We haven't closed it yet. There's still more investigation to do," he said. "We're by no means finished with this case." Ortega said detectives will continue their investigation to find out why Amanda was killed. "It wasn't a robbery or revenge or anything like that," Ortega said. "Right now, we don't know what the motive is."

Stan West, a family friend who was at the Howell home Friday night, said Amanda's mother had not been notified by Sheriff's Department officials about the arrests. "Hopefully, the arrests will lead to some closure for Amanda's mother," he said. Investigators had an extensive list to wrok through, Ortega said, and the scope of the inquiry narrowed until it focused on the two suspects. "She did have a lot of acquaintances throughout the city," Ortega said. "But as the investigation progressed, we started focusing our investigation on individuals. There was enough probable cause to pick them up."

The medical examiner's report stated the cause of Howell's death was "asphyxiation due to compression of the neck." Although the autopsy indicates that traces of marijuana and Rohypnol, known as the "date rape" drug, were found in her system, investigators believe she did not overdose and apparently was not sexually assaulted before her death. The two suspects are scheduled for a detention hearing Monday.
