    Alvin Oscar Simning was the son of John William Simning and Flora Meyer. Born on December 30, 1905, in Sheridan, Michigan, he had several siblings: Lloyd Clarence Simning (1900-1994), Estella Gertrude Simning (1902-1991), Daphene Naomi Simning (1904-1992), Dorothy Beatrice Simning (1908-1977), Margaret Lucille Simning (1911-1993), Milan John Simning (1912-1998), and Arnold Leroy Simning (1915-1962). Alvin grew up in Westbrook, Cottonwood, Minnesota, and in the 1920s, he lived in Wabasso, Redwood, Minnesota, with his parents and siblings. On April 4, 1934, he married Eleanor Blanche Morey (1911-1982) in St. Paul, Ramsey, Minnesota. Together, they had a daughter, Barbara Ann Simning (1935-2015), and a son. The family resided in St. Paul, Ramsey, Minnesota, where Alvin worked as a mechanic. Alvin served in the US Navy from July 27, 1940, until his discharge on October 14, 1941. He passed away on October 9, 1990, in Minneapolis, Minnesota, and is buried at Roselawn Cemetery in Roseville, MN.

Flora's parents, Alvin's maternal grandparents were Carl "Henry" Heinrich Meyer (1846-1926) of Eisbergen, Germany and Melissa Bertha Winslow (1847-1925) of Wabasso, Redwood, Minnesota, USA.
